Каждая пара в многопарном кабеле имеет два провода, один из которых условно называется прямой (передающий), а другой - обратным (приемным). Исторически термин произошел от названия двух проводов в коммутационном штекере, один из которых соединен с выступающим контактом (tip) и служит для подключения вызывной цепи, а второй подключен к кольцевому контакту (ring) - звонку.
